New Site/Forums

exactly that!

by rafe-SiN » Feb 26 2014, 4:47 am

The site and forums have been updated! The general layout and color scheme isn't going to be changed significantly so don't bother with that debate. Usergroup colors are still a work in progress while I figure out the best colors for the various backgrounds they will be on. Feel free to give suggestions for usergroup colors, but if you are going to do so then please be specific and make them in the form of the color hex code such as "#5b869c". If anything feels "hard to read" let me know too and I can look into adjusting things slightly to help with that. It looks readable on my screen! I will be honest though, I didn't test the site in any browser other than Chrome, so if it doesn't work in IE or Firefox you are more than welcome to let me know; however, I can't promise it'll be fixed anytime soon.

There are still some things to tweak here and there, but I felt it was in a state that I could get it out there and see if anything breaks! If you notice anything that looks weird or like it shouldn't be a certain way please respond to this thread and bring it to my attention. I tried to go to every nook and cranny of the site/forums, but I am sure I overlooked a style here and there. An example would be if you see a yellow background link/button on some page. I also plan to look for better smilies that actually have their transparency set up correctly(you will notice the white borders on the current ones :D ;) :x  ).

It should be obvious already, but I did import the old forums database and brought over the avatars/attachments. I pruned a good number of users out of the database(those which looked like bot accounts w/ 0 or 1 post), and tried to be careful when doing so; however, a few people might have slipped through and got deleted. If that's you then my bad! You can always create a new account.

A few things on the todo list still are:
  • Figure out a good layout for the streams page.
  • Get more history written/images for all history that are missing them.
  • Figure out where to get some artwork done for logo(maybe Kast can help when he gets back from his trip). That big space at the top is for this. Once I see the artwork I can then resize things around it.
  • Fix the "responsiveness" of the sidebar on the history page and the menu at the top of the forums. If you don't know what that is then don't worry bout it!

The only issue I have is the black text for a new/unread post.

When you say black text for new/unread post do you mean the black text when it is the "target"? Meaning in the url you'll see viewtopic.php?f=3&p=6978#p6978 where the "#p6978" is the target. If you click that url it'll reload this thread and your post will have black text. Is that what you mean?

I made it so it doesn't change color/bold the text when a post is a target, it just focuses the window to that post.

it could be your monitor settings. I know for me it looks way different on one of my screens apposed to the other. I have them on different settings.

It honestly looks fine for me. I have no problems with contrast or anything.
I have always preferred a subtle text color to the background instead of say, pure white on grey.

It is easier on the eyes.

Fixed some font issues today. It had been bugging me for a while and it dawned on me today that the browser was applying what is called "faux bold" for the various places the font-weight was set to "bold". This was because I wasn't setting up the bold styling correctly for the font I am using, thus the browser faked it. This caused a sort of "muddy" appearance for some text(headers on the forum index, the main/user menus to the right, etc).

After fixing this certain text is crisper and usernames can now be bold again without being unreadable. Granted the use of semi-bold(600 weight) over bold(700 weight) looks better in some circumstances so that ended up replacing some uses of bold.

Any chance you can add forum breadcrumb links to the top of the page?
