How to kill a (insert class here) thread WOTLK version
I don't know about you, but I feel like so much has changed with each class for the expansion that strats for killing other players have had to be altered.
I will give the arcane mage perspective.
Feel free to add to this (just because something works for me doesn't mean it's the only way)
Ret Pally
Ret pallies have CDs that you need to save your CDs to counter. Wasting a cool down too early will most certainly lead to death. It's like a game of chess. You counter their bubble with Iceblock, counter Repentance with Trinket, counter Hammer of Justice with Blink and Blessing of Freedom with Spell steal. The order in which these are used may vary, but as long as you save your cool downs for those specific counters you will be ok.
Remember: Any damage breaks repentance, their damage is increased to stunned targets, in world pvp they can lay on hands which is basically a full heal, most pallies will run in the direction you invis in and consecrate to break your stealth-reverse direction or make sure you are far enough away before you invis. And use Ice armor to make them waste mana on dispelling the chill effect
Death Knight
Probably the most annoying class to fight as a mage. Two handers with High top end dmg, instant ranged diseases that hit for a ton, slow effects with no CD, a 5 second silence, an melee range interrupt, 5 seconds of magic immunity and last but not least Death grip which is like charge in reverse. That doesn't include talented abilities like hungering cold (like an AoE hunter ice trap), anti magic zone (a protective bubble that fgt pallies hang out in an heal), desecrated ground (a plague strike proc that causes an AoE slow effect) and more. Need I say more? A kiting nightmare. \
DK's are most effective when paired with another dmg class imo, but no matter what they are annoying.
Like most fights 1v1 its a game of CD chess, only with more variables. The key vs a DK is to keep distance. Death coil, Death grip and strangulate have 30 yard range and Icy touch and Chains of Ice have a 20 yard range. That means that you have a 10-20 yard window to keep out of harms way. The major issue with keeping distance is Deathgrip. A good DK will do one of two things with his deathgrip. He will either notice you are not frost and try to open with Deathgrip Strangulate to force the Ice block, or wait for you to blink then use it.
Try to force his trinket with sheep and slow. CC a DK enough and he will either trinket immediately or (hopefully) use anti magic shell. You need to save your trinket for chains of ice BUT do not use trinket unless you are sure you can out range him. Chains of ice stops you in your tracks, then every second for ten seconds you gain 10% movement speed back. Since it has no CD if you are within 20 yards and you trinket he can just re-apply. I like to wait for the Deathgrip+chains before i even think about trinket so I can blink+sheep to avoid wasting it. Also keep mage armor on. Now that it reduces negative magical effects by 50% it is a must vs locks DKs and Spriests.
Another really annoying aspect to DKs is Shadow of Death. This unholy talent allpws a DK to re-animate as a ghoul for 45 seconds after you kill him at 50% HP. 45 seconds sounds short, but they hit cloth for 1-2k, have a leap and a stun. Take them seriously. I just wait for diseases to drop and Invis to waste the CD if im low, but if you are at 80% HP or better you can kite them fairly easily.
To be honest, in many cases killing a DK is easy as arcane. The challenge is surviving all of their tricks long enough to wait out the anti magic shell and PoMpewpewpew them to death.
Summary: Use Mage armor, Save blink for DG, stay max range, trinket CoI only when you are more than 20 yards away and DG is on CD, use CC to force trinket or anti magic, after Anti magic is down pewpewPOMpewpew and don't get ghouled in the grill 3 seconds after he dies.
Warlocks
With the changes from Wrath, fighting this class went from one of the hardest to one of the easiest 1v1.
Here's what you save your CD's for:
Save blink for shadow nova
Save CS for Fear or Chaos bolt
Keep fire shield up to soak up immolates
if you see them casting incinerate put on Fire or mana shield (pref fire) and take the hit to build up Incanter's absorption
Save your PoM pyro for a big Incanter's absorption from the above
Keep slow up always
nova pets
Profit
More to come...
